Ag Féachain Siar -50 Years Ago

These young men were crowned county champions in Comórtas / Cumann Na mBunscol 1970. The team was a combination of The Downs Curraghmore and Coralstown national schools who defeated Tubberclaire in the final, which was played in Cusack Park in June 1970. This was only the second time for this combination to win the title. The previous success was in 1958. Interestingly, five of that 1958 winning team went on to add their third senior championship medal to their collection when they defeated Moate in the final in September 1970. Similarly five of the players who won that schools final in 1970 went on to win senior medals with the club in 1980.

The structure of the competition in those days meant that small schools came together to play in what was then a single competition/championship. Today the competition is based on the number of teachers in the schools and multiple championships are played. This is an excellent way of ensuring as many boys and girls as possible get to play and have their day in the sun when they play Cusack Park! What better incentive to be involved?
