With all the media attention primarily focused on The Covid -19 crisis and rightly so, we thought this look down memory lane of fifty years ago might lighten the mood, at least a little bit? The extract from the match report below was taken from the Westmeath Examiner of  September  1970 and was compiled by Gerry Buckley in the publication,  Celebrating 125 Years of The Downs GAA Club, which was published in 2018.

Hopefully we will be in a position to bring you further snippets next week of ‘Ag féachaint siar’

1970 THE DOWNS 0-9 MOATE 0-9 (draw)

1970 THE DOWNS 1-15 MOATE 0-12 (replay)

It took two games to decide this final. When the sides met on August 30th, they finished level, 0-9 each. The drawn game was exciting, with The Downs snatching a last-minute equaliser from a Mick Carley free. Scorers for The Downs in the drawn game were: Larry O’Keeffe 0-2, Mick Carley 0-2, Liam Egerton 0-2, Jimmy Henry, 0-2, Tosh Cleary 0-1. Scorers for Moate were: Danny Regan 0-8, Denis Galvin 0-1.

The replay saw Moate battle gamely but they could not halt The Downs on their way to their third title in succession. Moate played against the wind from the start and were in trouble after five minutes when a Pat McManus shot left The Downs a goal up. Larry O’Keeffe and Mick Carley added points before Danny Regan had Moate’s first score. Carley and Regan exchanged points twice before Moate took the initiative and had points from John and Mick McKenna to leave only two points between them. The rain was falling as Mick Carley pointed two Downs’ frees. Jimmy Henry had two points. Carley and Regan exchanged points just before the break to leave The Downs leading 1-9 to 0-6 at half-time. Both sides added six points in the second half. Regan and Mick McKenna had the first two for Moate and then Regan added another, cutting The Downs’ lead to three points. A point from Andy Gillivan cut the lead further but Jimmy Henry hit back for The Downs with a point. Regan had a point for Moate to leave just two points between the sides going into the last quarter. A point by Pat McManus signalled the beginning of the end for Moate and Tosh Cleary put them further adrift with another Downs’ point. Dom Murtagh and Mick McKenna exchanged points but, by now, it was clear that The Downs would win. The game looked as if it might come to a premature end when a large crowd of spectators encroached onto the pitch. When order was restored, Tosh Cleary and Dessie Hamm had the last pair of points, resulting in The Downs becoming the first team to win the Flanagan Cup three times in-a-row.

THE DOWNS (draw): Olly Colgan, Brian Murtagh, Seamus Mulligan, Mick Sweeney, Liam Murtagh, Christy Corroon, Jimmy Corroon, Dom Murtagh [capt.], Liam Egerton (0-2), Jimmy Henry (0-2), Mick Carley (0-2), Tosh Cleary (0-1), Larry O’Keeffe (0-2), Pat McManus, Barney Corroon. Sub: Paddy Nolan for Cleary.

THE DOWNS (replay): Barney Corroon, Brian Murtagh, Seamus Mulligan, Mick Sweeney, Liam Mulligan, Christy Corroon, Jimmy Corroon, Liam Egerton, Dom Murtagh [capt.] (0-1), Jimmy Henry (0-4), Mick Carley (0-6), Tosh Cleary (0-2), Larry O’Keeffe (0-1), Pat McManus (1-1), Colm Maguire. Subs: Pat Duffy for Maguire, Paddy Nolan for Cleary.
