Junior Championship

The Junior team travelled to Springfield last Thursday evening knowing that a result would secure a place in the Knockout rounds. Playing against a strong breeze in the first half the lads did well to lead by the minimum at the break 0-08 to 0-07. The Downs remained in control for much of the second half and lead by four points with five left to play. However the home side rallied and score 1-02 without reply, before Ciaran Nolan stepped up to score the leveller and send The Downs through. Full time The Downs 0-14 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-11.

Senior Championship

On Friday last we travelled to Cusack Park to take on Coralstown/Kinnegad in the third round of this year’s Championship. Our opponents set up very defensively throughout the entire game and our lads had to be patient in attack at times, this was proven with the half time score line of 0-03 apiece. However, during the second half there was some excellent shooting from Luke Loughlin to beat the blanket defence and the all important score came mid-way through the half when Adam Loughlin found the net to give The Downs the win. Full time 1-09 to 0-10.

Minor Championship

Our minor lads our out in championship action this Wednesday at the Semi-final stage against St. Lomans at 7pm. Be sure to get into Lakepoint to support the lads.

The Downs Ladies

Senior Championship

What a great way to celebrate The Downs Ladies Club’s first ever Senior Championship match in our short history with a hard fought for win. Following on from last year’s Intermediate Championship win all concerned with this team knew that Senior was going to be a step up. The first half was a struggle with stiff competition throughout the field with whilst both sides traded scores it was Shamrocks that proved to be more clinical.

The 2nd half saw Shamrocks push on but girls stayed in touch with a lot of selfless runs, defending at every opportunity and not standing back from anything that was thrown at them. This was a full squad performance was we knew it was going to be. Our defence kept us in the game – midfield ran themselves into the ground and our forwards do what they best and keep putting up the scores.

Tyrellspass are up next and we look forward to travelling the them next Sunday 26th August with kick off at 6.30pm.

Senior squad on the day – Sarah Maguire, Aisling Egerton, Aoife Mullen, Emma Murtagh, Gillian Ferguson, Leanne Duncan, Niamh Rowan, Niamh Nolan (Capt), Megan Dowdall, Lucy Power, Sheila McGrath, Olivia Glynn, Britney McNamee, Ellen Taite, Ciara Faulkner, Aoife Rowan, Mary Lynam, Ciara Wynne, Leon Briek
