Division 3 Final

We travelled to Cusack Park last Friday night to take on Miltown in this year’s Division 3 final. Miltown started with a high intensity and raced into an early 0-07 to 0-01 lead after just ten minutes. The Downs began to claw their way back into the game through a number of frees and trailed 0-10 to 0-06 at the break. Miltown again started the second half at a high pace and pulled away to lead by 6 with just fifteen minutes to play. The Downs made a number of positional changes and began to create overlaps through Phillip Doherty, Liam Faulkner and Eoghan Moore which caused Miltown problems. A long ball from Conor Coughlan who found Declan Lynam on the edge of the square to then find the net left two points between the sides and ensured The Downs were in with a chance going into the last ten minutes. A Shane Carroll free, quickly followed up by a Conor Murray point out on the right meant we were level. Both teams had chances after this but The Downs took the lead for the first time with the game entering injury time through a free kick and managed to hold off some late Miltown pressure to ensure captain Cian Carty was to collect the cup. Well done to the team and management who impressively went unbeaten throughout the entire campaign.

Division 1

We played host to St. Lomans last Tuesday evening in the last round of the Division one league. Unfortunately we couldn’t manage to get a result and lost out on a 5-13 to 1-18 score line. There were plenty of positives to take from the game for The Downs, and although we were unable to get a result we retained our Division 1 status for 2019.

Westmeath Hurlers

Hard Luck to Darragh, Niall, Shane and teammates who fell just short in the Joe McDonagh cup last Sunday in Croke Park.
