Division 1
The Downs picked up a vital two points in the league when we played host to Athlone last Sunday morning. The Downs played well in the opening half playing into a stiff breeze. Goals from Ian Martin and PJ Maguire meant we led 2-06 to 0-05 at the break and in a strong position. Our opponents were quicker to start the second half and had two goals scored in the opening minutes to throw the game into the balance. Both teams had chances to pull away throughout the half but it wasn’t until Adam Loughlin found the net in injury time was the result confirmed with The Downs winning 3-11 to 3-07. Best wishes to Athlone’s Stephen Ward who picked up a bad injury in the second half and thanks to Kathy Sherrin and Aoife Rowan for their assistance with the incident.
Division 5
The Division side team continued their impressive recent form with a comprehensive 3-15 to 1-10 win over St. Lomans last Saturday evening in Lakepoint. A first half goal from Shane Carroll kept The Downs in touch at the break trailing 1-04 to 1-06. The Downs found an extra gear in the second half with two further goals from James Conroy and Liam Faulkner as well as some impressive points from Max Rowan and Taylor Daly ensured victory and two vital league points. Best wishes to Conor Gavin on his recovery from an injury he picked up early in the first half and thanks to Aoife Rowan for her first aid assistance.
