U16 County Champions

Last Saturday morning in Cusack Park our u16 lads became division 1 county champions. The Downs were slow to get going and found themselves 0-05 to 0-00 down after just ten minutes. The lads then began to get to grips with their opponents and led 1-04 to 0-06 at the break thanks to a cracking goal from Kevin O’ Sullivan. After the interval the lads really took over proceeding and lead by 1-11 to 0-07 with just four minutes of time remaining. Kinnegad made a late push with two goals but our lads held their nerve to run out 1-13 to 2-07 win. Well done to the lads and Management on a great year.

Senior Championship

The Senior Lads were also in action in Cusack Park last Saturday in their Championship quarter final replay against Athlone. The game was very similar to the drawn game with little between the sides, and it was level t 0-05 each at the interval. Two brilliant first half saves from Kevin Maguire ensured we stayed I touch of our opponents. The second half continued where the first left off with neither side being able to take control. The turning point of the game came when Joe Moran got his second Championship goal in as many games with four minutes of time remaining to give The Downs a 1-09 to 0-11 advantage. Athlone began to apply real pressure in injury time but The Downs defence held strong, and we move on the semi-final against Tyrrelspass. Full Time 1-10 to 0-12. Team: K. Maguire, D. Egerton, J. Hogan, T. McCormack, N. Nolan, S. Raleigh, C. Coughlan, S. Egerton, A. Loughlin, J. Moran, D. Egerton, H. Caulfield, L. Loughlin, L. Folan, S. Power. Subs used: C. Murray, A. Kilmartin, M. Kelly, D.
