U16 Girls

On a mild evening in Kevin Molloy Park, The Downs U16 girls hosted a determined and skilful Milltown side. The Downs got off to a great start with an early goal from Ciara Faulkner followed by fine points from Alex O’Connor and Roisín Murray. Milltown were however quick to reply to draw the game level midway through the half. The Downs then dominated possession for the remainder of the first period with a string of fine points from Lauren Guilfoyle, Ciara Faulkner (3), Emma Thompson, Megan Dowdall & Alex O’Connor. However late scores before the break from Milltown meant The Downs led just by 1-9 to 2-3 at half time. We opened the second period with a great point from Megan Dowdall to stretch the lead to 4 points. The following 15 minutes were tense as The Downs dominated possession but strugglesd to effect the scoreboard. Powerful defending by our half back line of Andrea Daly, Roisín Murray, Caoimhe Hunt (and later Áine Murray) repelled Milltown’s attacks, and when the ball came deep our full back line of Jayne Holton, Kayleigh Ready and Aideen Gilbride won hard possession to deny our opponents any scores. Finally The Downs got the break they deserved with an opportunist goal from Ellie O’Brien allowing us breathing space. Further points from Caoimhe Scally, Zara Murtagh and a Ciara Faulkner free were balanced off by a late Milltown goal to leave The Downs winners by 2-13 to 3-3. The scoreboard does not reflect the closeness of the contest as The Downs girls were made to work very hard for their victory. Our midfield of Megan Dowdall and Caoimhe Scally was outstanding, driving the team forward, ably supported by the hard running of Roisín Murray and Lauren Guilfoyle. Half forwards Laura Robson and Katie Moore worked very hard and supported the attacks which were well finished by a great full forward line. Great performances all round. Two tough away games remain in our efforts to reach the semi finals. We meet next Thursday evening (April 27th), with details to be confirmed early next week.
