Underage Training

Underage training continues this Friday for U6 to U12 ages at 6.30 – 7.30.

U14 Boys

The lads put up a great display before losing out to an impressive Coralstown/Kinnegad side in the 1st round of the league played in Kevin Molloy Park on Thursday evening last. Well done to both teams for an impeccably observed minute's silence before the throw-in to remember Ben, this being the first official fixture without our Star in the Sky. On this Sunday, we travel to Lakepoint Park for the group stages of Feile at 12pm along with the host side, Coralstown / Kinnegad and Mayland/Tang. It's great to have a few new faces on board this year as well as a few more returning after a break. New players are always most welcome.

The lads have been invited back to London this year by St. Paul's Academy and Dulwich Harps for their prestigious U14 7-a-side tournament. The trip takes place on Friday 5th to Sunday 7th May and places are still available. contact Marc 087 8362297 or Kenny 086 8740282. The lads are on the lookout for sponsors of any size or shape and will also be fund-raising over the next few weeks. They will hold a Cake Sale on Friday 28th and a Table Quiz on Saturday 29th April.

U16 Boys

Our U16 lads kicked off their league campaign in impressive style on Monday 27th with a strong performance at home against Caulry. Full time 8-16 to 2-07. Squad: C. Flatterty, E. Egerton M. Conneely, C. Drumm, G. Clearly, N. Lynott, C. McCourt, L. Moran, K. Sullivan, B. Harte, A. Conneely, A. Moran, D. Doherty, O. Raleigh, E. Murray A Mooney, T. Tuite S. Power, D. Smyth, E. Scally, P. McCool, A. Shaw, E. Rhatigan C. Mullen.

Hard luck to our figure dancers who lost out in a tight decision in the Leinster final last Sunday, but still finish the year as county champions. Well done to both St. Josephs and Bunbronsa on their success in Léiriu and Set dancing.

The Downs Ladies Football

The Downs Ladies had a weekend off from League commitments so we had an opportunity to get a challenge match in. Carrickedmond from Longford were the opposition and this turned out to a tough physical match with honours even at the final whistle. It provided the management team with an opportunity to watch girls playing in different positions and provided everyone with game time. Carrickedmond gained promotion from Intermediate to Senior grade in ’16 so it was good to see our panel match them across the pitch both for effort and range of scoring. We are out next Friday evening in Round 3 of Div. 2 League with local rivals Coralstown Kinnegad the opposition, so why not come along and support the girls.

Over the weekend we had 5 of The Downs Minors – Lucy Power, Sheila McGrath, Britney McNamee, Aoife Mullen & Olivia Glynn - involved with Westmeath in the Leinster Minor A Semi Final against Kildare which is an excellent achievement for our Club. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side and they lost by 2 points in extra time.

U16 Girls

On a sun drenched Sunday afternoon in Kevin Molloy Park, The Downs U16 girls hosted a strong and skilful Moate All Whites. The Downs took an early lead with a long range goal from Megan Dowdall. A similar goal from Laura Robson was sandwiched between a couple of points from Moate as The Downs girls maintained early control with the wind at their backs. However, a couple of lengthy stoppages disrupted our rhythm as Moate ended the half stronger scoring 2-1. Scores from Megan Dowdall and Ciara Faulkner meant however we were only a point behind at the break as we trailed 2-2 to 2-3. Moate made a very strong start to the second half with three unanswered points to stretch their lead to four. From here on in our defence was immense repelling Moate attacks. Our full back line of Jayne Holton, Kayleigh Ready and Aideen Gilbride won every ball that was driven in long and our half back line of Aine McManus, Roisin Murray & Andrea Daly drove the team forward. Well taken points from Lauren Guilfoyle and Ciara Faulkner were matched by scores from our opponents meaning we were left with a mountain to climb to climb entering the last quarter. At this point our midfield of Caoimhe Scally and Megan Dowdall took control and worked well with our forwards to work a well taken goal by Ellie O’Brien. A fine point from Katie Moore from a tight angle drew us level entering injury time. A last attack saw Megan Dowdall find Ciara Faulkner who unerringly split the posts with a long range point. There was time for Moate to launch one more attack but our defence again withstood the threat to ensure The Downs girls emerged as victors by the smallest of margins with a score line of 3-6 to 2-8.

This was a vital win for The Downs in our quest to reach the semi-finals. On the day, a draw would have been a fair result but the late, late surge and two well taken points under pressure from The Downs showed a hunger and desire for victory that will stand to us as the season develops. Well done to all.Squad: Caoimhe Hunt, Jayne Holton, Kayleigh Ready, Aideen Gilbride, Aine McManus, Roisin Murray, Andrea Daly, Megan Dowdall, Caoimhe Scally, Laura Robson, Ciara Faulkner, Lauren Guilfoyle, Katie Moore, Alexandra O’Connor, Emily Gallagher, Emma Thompson, Zara Murtagh, Ellie O’Brien, Helen Tansey
