U14B Championship FinalThe Downs 4:6 Caulry 2:11
On a damp and windy Sunday afternoon in Kilbeggan the replay of the U14 B Girls Championship final took place versus Caulry four weeks after the drawn game. Conditions were tough for both sides and the pitch was sticky in places, so it is great credit to both sides that the supporters were treated to a highly entertaining game. Early exchanges saw Caulry took the lead with some fine long range points. The Downs eventually took a foothold in the game with a couple of points from Ellie O’Brien and a long range goal from Caoimhe Scally. Caulry however came back at us but our girls fought back with some fine points from Laura Robson and Francesca Walshe. An opportunist goal from Katie Cribben just before half time put The Downs ahead by 2-5 to 0-6 at the break. Caulry dominated early exchanges after the re-start, scoring 1-2 with a point from Ellie O’Brien leaving us one score to the good. Caulry then scored 1-2 to take the lead for the first time since early in the game. The Downs girls however rose to the challenge and a fine goal from Ellie O’Brien brought us back within touching distance. A late goal by Caoimhe Monaghan put us 2 points ahead in injury time, when Caulry scored a point to narrow the gap to one score. Time however ran out, leaving The Downs victorious by a score line of 4-6 to 2-11. On the day our girls never ever gave up, digging deep to claw their way back into the game when a fine Caulry side was pulling away. Our girls were gracious in victory and after a 27 game long season, The Anne Cooney Perpetual Cup stays in The Downs for another year. Thanks to all the parents throughout the year and the Ladies Club committee for all of their ongoing hard work and commitment. The Downs girls deserve huge credit for the character shown throughout a difficult game and can be very proud of how they performed and conducted themselves on the day, and indeed during the season. We look forward to seeing everyone back in the Black and Amber next year
