The Downs Ladies Football

Under 16 Championship Final:           The Downs 6:5            Killucan 3:11

From the throw in The Downs hit the ground running and dominated the early from midfield through the half forward line and full forward line. The Downs movement on and off the ball created a lot of scoring chances and although they ended the first half 4:5 to 0:4 they could have started the second half with a more comfortable lead having missed a number of scoring of scoring opportunities. In order to achieve that score you need to have a strong defensive unit and we were rock solid with Killucan pushing to try and get a stronger foothold in this match.

As with every encounter between these two teams you never write off either team and true to form, Killucan came out fighting. The 2nd half was a very tense affair  but you have to give The Downs the credit they deserve, they worked very hard – with individual players covering every blade of grass and suffering physically from their efforts but it showed their fitness levels and courage to stay in the fight. Well timed goals and points as the game progressed continued to keep The Downs ahead who had their noses in front from the first whistle and never surrendered that lead.

In recent years this bunch of girls have challenged for silverware against this same Killucan team, narrowly missing out on previous occasions but this time they were not to be denied from a scoring it was a game of two halves but the level of skill and determination showed throughout the this game by these two teams was clearly enjoyed by both sets of supporters.

Girls you fully deserve your win, well done to both teams and mentors as the standard of football on show was of the highest order with a generous sprinkling of county players from both clubs.

Intermediate Championship: The Downs 2:11, Clan Gael. 2:11

Going into the final group game needing a point to secure a semi-final place the team kept us on the  edge in a tightly contested game leading 1:5 to 1:4 at half-time.  The second half was similarly a close game with Clan Gael scoring at the end to draw the game.
