The Downs Ladies Football

U16 Division 1 Championship                    The Downs 4-6                  Moate 6-0

Last Tuesday evening The Downs travelled to Hogan Park in Moate for their final group game eventually coming out on top after a tough physical encounter. This win leaves us unbeaten in our group and secured a place in this year’s Division 1 U16 Final.

Moate put our girls under pressure from the kick off with a number of goals but as the game progressed our defence stared to gel and our forwards took some well taken goals & points which kept us in touch going in level half time – The Downs 4-6 Moate 6-0

In the 2nd half Moate went ahead again with a number of points but when the Downs eventually settled and outscored Moate 2-2 to 0-4 taking control of the game. Downs Squad on the day Caoimhe Hunt, Clodagh Kelly, Emma Thompson, Aoife Mullen, Hannah Dalton, Lauren Collins, Ciara Faulkner, Sheila McGrath (1-0), Megan Dowdall (1-0), Grainne Smyth, Lucy Power (2-3), Olivia Glynn, Britney McNamee (2-1), Erica Hynes, Orla Murray (0-4), Alex O’Connor, Roisin Murray.

Well done Girls.

U14 Girls Championship,            The Downs  2:6                 Mullingar Shamrocks 1:4

Our U14 girls panel continued their impressive run in this year’s championship with a hard fought victory against a strong Mullingar Shamrocks side. After the concession of an early score, The Downs dominated possession in the first half and the defence was resolute. Scores from Ellie O’Brien and Caoimhe Scally meant we led by 1-4 to 0-1 at the break. After swapping 0-2 early in the second half, both sides created further scoring chances as Mullingar Shamrocks dominated possession to narrow the gap to 2 points. However, our defence stood strong and a late goal by Francesca Walshe allowed The Downs to run out victors by a score line of 2-6 to 1-4. Aideen Gilbride, Isabel Hunt and Katie Murphy stood out amongst an excellent defensive display whilst the hard work of Caoimhe Scally and Caoimhe Monaghan at midfield was outstanding. In the forward line, the scores of Ellie O’Brien and Grace O’Sullivan were vital along with the hard running of the remainder of the attack which created many scoring opportunities. In truth this game could have gone either way with scores at crucial times making the difference.

Our unbeaten run in the Championship means we are now directly into the semi finals in early September. In the coming weeks we play our remaining league and championship games along with a number of challenges in preparation for the final phase of the season. Our next league game takes place on Friday July 22nd at 7.45 in The Downs versus Caulry. All support is appreciated.
